In this scene from "City of God, Gangs & Drugs," correspondent Mariana van Zeller and a local pastor go to one of Rio de Janeiro's gang-controlled favelas. There, crack is bought, sold and used openly, but both addicts and traffickers still welcome religion.

"Even though they have and use assault rifles, grenades, pistols," the pastor says, "they fear the words of Christ." These favelas have been targeted by Brazilian police who hope to "pacify" Rio de Janeiro before the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics come to town.
