Losing Your Virginity At The Melbourne Film Fest

Proving his chops well beyond his role as Moss in The I.T. Crowd, Richard Ayoade is no stranger to life behind the lens. He brings a British comedy about a boy desperate to lose his virginity and stop his mother running off with a new age mystic.

A veteran on the music video scene (with work for the likes of The Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Last Shadow Puppets and Kasabian), Submarine is Ayoade’s first foray into the world of feature films. Tapping into the two most important things in the life of a teenage boy: having sex and his mother (although these two are not necessarily connected), the film follows a young boy as he attempts to lose his virginity and also stop his mother from becoming involved with an old flame. Featuring a soundtrack by The Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, Submarine is a celebration of everything British, with some offbeat humour added for fun.
