Sonny & The Sunsets: Don’t Look Directly At The Sonny

San Francisco troubadour Sonny Smith used to live in a van down by the beach, and you can feel the surf and the lazy days in his jangly, easy-going pop sons with the Sunsets.

But Smith is far more ambitious than your stereotypical beach bum: his band's latest album, Hit After Hit, was preceded by 100 Records, a project in which Smith invented enough fictional bands to fill up a jukebox, wrote and recorded the bands' songs with friends, and then filled up a homemade jukebox with the resulting 7"s. Even when working on a less industrious scale, Sonny & the Sunsets turn out the tunes with ease. Just coming off of Piychfork Chicago, the band is off and running again.
