Wales Lets Out The Big Roar

“Joy” is a good adjective for this London-via-Wales trio, Joy Formidable. Many of their songs build on waves of crashing guitar, each building and soaring until you feel giddy and overwhelmed.

With recent performances at many of the major British festivals (Glastonbury, Leeds, Reading) as well as opening for Sir Paul McCartney last summer at his first concert in Wales in 35 years, the Joy Formidable have laid the groundwork for the release of their first full-length album, “The Big Roar,” and have set the date for its American launch to coincide with SXSW Week in March.

Childhood friends Ritzy Bryan (guitar, lead vocals) and Rhydian Dafydd (bass, harmony vocals) are from Mold in North Wales. “There’s a beauty and a loneliness to the landscape there,” says Rhydian, which can be seen in their video for “Whirring.”The trio is completed by drummer Matt Thomas and through nearly constant touring, the Joy Formidable have positioned themselves to make “a big roar” in 2011. By the way, the album title was inspired by the Pororoca, the ferocious tidal bore that roars where the Atlantic and the Amazon collide. Register to see the Joy Formidable roar at SXSW 2011.
